18 Aug The Scion FR-S is now a Toyota 86 in the U.S.
With Toyota discontinuing it’s Scion sub-brand in the U.S., several models such as the FR-S will continue to exist but will be rebranded as Toyotas. In this case the FR-S will soon be known as the Toyota 86. This has actually been its name in other markets outside of the United States ever since it was introduced. Beginning with the 2017 model year, the Toyota 86 has a refreshed look and a few other upgrades to go with its “new to us” name in America.
The new model features a more aggressive front end and new LED front headlamps. The engine gets several upgrades as well that result in higher performance numbers. The 6-speed manual transmission cars will get five extra horsepower, for a total of 205 hp. That’s five more than any 2016 model. I do agree with others who feel the FR-S suffered from a lack of horsepower. I feel Toyota may have missed a good opportunity in its new model to up the horsepower to at least 250.
Inside the car, a new material for the seats, plus a material referred to as “Granlux” covers the dashboard and door trim. A 7-inch touchscreen, which comes standard, allows for easy access to audio, bluetooth phone functions and the optional navigation system. The screen also features a new backup camera. An 8-speaker Pioneer audio system is also standard.
All of this adds up to a nice sports car for the money, if the pricing is similar to before. Even if you think it needs more power, it’s still a fun car to drive and own.
