The Kids Will Never Be Late Again!

The Kids Will Never Be Late Again!

“Often times you could use a little more horsepower.”

That’s a favorite quote of mine and it’s really true with just about any car. Lately the horsepower race has gotten a little crazy with everything from the Dodge Challenger Hellcat to the Bugatti Chiron. I’ve written before about the continued popularity of SUVs and crossovers. Even this segment of cars isn’t immune to the horsepower and 0-60 time race.

Porsche has now announced a performance upgrade to the Turbo version of it’s smaller SUV, the Macan. Now in the interest of full disclosure, I love the Macan and wouldn’t mind owning one. Did the Macan Turbo really need a performance upgrade? Not really. It came standard with a 400 horsepower twin-turbo V6 and a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. Now Porsche has created the Macan Turbo with Performance Package. Right away this ups the horsepower to 440 and drops the 0-60 time to 4.4 seconds.  Other figures will be released soon.

All of this has got me thinking about why so many SUVs are now being offered with extreme performance and why so many sports cars have disappeared from the market. I really believe that more and more customers are wanting performance and sportiness, but the reality of life is that most families can’t or won’t compromise on space for people and cargo. Yes, these high performance sport utes are expensive but maybe not as expensive as buying an SUV and a sports car for the weekends. That’s why a high performance SUV makes sense as an all-around family car. Not only can all the kids and their backpacks comfortably fit but with all that power, they will never be late to school again.

Here’s a list I put together of the fastest high performance SUVs based on 0-60 time:

Name Price 0-60 Time
Tesla Model X P100D from $135,500 2.9 seconds
Bentley Bentayga from $229,100 3.5 seconds
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S from $159,600 3.8 seconds
BMW X5M from $98,800 4.0 seconds
BMW X6M from $102,200 4.0 seconds
Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG S from $108,840 4.1 seconds
Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG from $49,900 4.3 seconds
Porsche Macan Turbo with Performance Package from $87,495 4.4 seconds
Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG from $124,100 4.5 seconds
Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR from $111,350 4.5 seconds
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT from $65,595 4.6 seconds
Porsche Cayenne GTS from $97,200 4.8 seconds
