17 Nov One Word Describes Tesla’s New 2nd-Gen Roadster: Epic
Late last night after unveiling their new semi truck, Tesla introduced its 2nd generation Roadster and the numbers are staggering.
Tesla is calling it an all-electric record setting supercar. It will do 0-60 in 1.9 seconds and 0-100 in 4.2 seconds. The specific top speed wasn’t revealed except to say 250 mph+. The idea is for it to be the quickest and fastest car on the market. Currently the Koenigsegg Agera RS holds the record for top speed in a road car at 277 mph. Beyond this it will have Tesla’s new 200kwh battery pack which is double the size of the P100D Models S and X and will be good for 620 miles of range. That will make it the longest range electric vehicle on the market. The news just keeps getting wilder because it has 4 seats as well.
So, now you are thinking how much does all the madness cost. Well, surprisingly, not that much in the overall scheme of things. The base price is $200,000. That puts it in direct competition with Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. Not too mention that Koenigsegg that can do 277 mph it costs well over $1.5 million dollars. Here’s a look at some of the Tesla Roadsters direct competitors.
Porsche 911 Turbo S
starting at $190,700
0-60 – 2.8 seconds
Ferrari 488 GTB
starting at $252,800
0-60 – 3.0 seconds
Ferrari 812 Superfast
starting at $335,575
0-60 – 2.8 seconds
Lamborghini Huracan
starting at $199,800
0-60 – 2.8 seconds
The only other facts we know is that it will have AWD and the removable glass roof will store in the trunk much like a targa top. In addition you can place an order at this link but you’ll need a $50,000 deposit.
My initial reaction to this car is one of awe. I love talking about what the people at Tesla are doing to change the game. It might not be for everyone, but Elon is making a very compelling case to say you can have this exotic sports car that’s really, really quick, seats 4 and only costs a couple hundred grand. That in and of itself is quite an accomplishment. I spent some time earlier this year with a Model S P100D and the power in that was really impressive. It can’t imagine what the Roadster will feel like with so much power in a more compact and sporty package.
